This is my project 'blog' for a current commission I am working on for Broomfield NHS Hospital in Essex. I will be displaying my current visuals for the project and updating them as the artworks themselves change, and as the project develops. I’ll also be adding notes from design meetings and any other written pieces that are appropriate to explaining the artworkPlease feel free to make comments. Project Artist Statement –Tom Pearman March 2009

‘My approach toward the commission is to encompass the above with the overall theme of all the art commissions, being ‘inside / outside’. I plan to produce a number of artworks using the materials of printed, fired glass and custom Polyrey laminate panels. (Polyrey being a large company that produces plastic laminate sheeting).

The artworks will consist of imagery based upon the Essex landscape, including local tree and plant types. The artworks will form a series of landscapes, which will be influenced by local historical and contemporary postcards. The artworks will also be influenced by night and day scenes and the process known as ‘movie matte painting’, the traditional visual effect used by filmmakers to enhance a film’s scene, by painting imagery on glass and placing this glass between the subject and the film camera. These landscapes will be split into ‘components’, such as foregrounds and backgrounds. Subsequently these ‘components’ will be spread along designated areas of the hospital. The key areas that have been identified for artworks for level 2 have been the main corridor walls and the walls of the waiting rooms.’
